John Velasquez, Miller’s Merry Manor Administrator Selected as “Administrator of the Year”
John Velasquez, Administrator at Miller’s Merry Manor in Marion, was recently honored as the “Administrator of the Year” by the Indiana Health Care Association (IHCA) during their annual Conference and Expo held last week in Indianapolis. Nominations for the award were submitted by peers from rehabilitation and nursing facilities around the State, and the winning recipient was determined by a number of criteria, including testimonials from employees.
Velasquez was nominated by Miller’s Director of Nursing, Lisa Garrett, RN and Staffing Coordinator, Melissa Warner, who wrote “John has commitment and passion for his facility. He exudes compassion, understanding, a positive attitude, sense of humor, and leadership. He is rarely seen in his office because he knows the importance of being accessible to staff, residents, and their families. He allows residents to continue with their interests and improves their quality of life.” Adds Patrick Boyle, President/CEO of Miller’s Health Systems, “We’re proud of John and what he’s accomplished at Miller’s in Marion over the last 4 ½ years. During the transition in ownership, he joined a group of dedicated employees, and transformed the building and the systems for caring for their residents. In addition, he’s been able to show the employees what it means for them to be the local employee-owners of their company. He has provided great leadership.”
A Health Facility Administrator since 2002, Velasquez has worked for Miller’s Merry Manor for 11 years, and is currently a Senior Administrator, responsible for overseeing all aspects of the operations at Miller’s Merry Manor in Marion, as well as serving as consultant and mentor to new Administrators. In addition, Velasquez is credentialed as a preceptor, training future Administrators for licensure. Speaking of the award, he stated, “I am honored and humbled to receive this award, as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. This award really belongs to the entire staff of Miller’s Merry Manor of Marion who truly care about their residents, and show their pride in their employee-owned company and facility. I will continue to do my best to take care of our residents, families, staff, and our community.”
Velasquez grew up in Marion, and attended Ball State University, where he received both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in Health Science. He has served as Phi Delta Theta’s chapter advisor since 1999 and acts as a mentor to young college men, encouraging them in involvement in philanthropies, attaining high grades, and sound rectitude. He was recently named Phi Delta Theta Alumnus of the Year. Velasquez lives in Hartford City with his wife and three children. He is an avid traveler and birder, and is on the Indiana Audubon Society Board of Directors. He is a member of the Marion Lions and Kiwanis Clubs as well as Marion’s Mississinewa Audubon Club.
